From Design to Code Process

A strong design handoff can save hours of unnecessary back-and-forth between designers and developers. The goal isn't simply to deliver a design file—it's to provide enough context to build the intended experience accurately.
Build reusable components
Organize your design around reusable components rather than creating every element from scratch. This makes the design easier to maintain and gives developers a clearer structure to work with.
Define responsive behavior
Don't only provide a desktop design. Explain how important elements should behave across different screen sizes.
Document important interactions
Hover states, dropdowns, animations, transitions, and error states can easily be missed if they aren't documented or demonstrated.
Use consistent naming
Clear component and layer names make large design files easier for everyone to understand.
Communicate early
The best handoffs aren't a one-way process. Discuss technical constraints with developers before the design is completely finished.
A great handoff creates a shared understanding between design and development—and ultimately leads to a better product.
